What Is Dandruff?
Our skin is in a constant state of regeneration and renewal and when this happens the old and dead skin is peeled out of the scalp. This process is typical and happens to everybody constantly. Usually the flakes of dead skin are too tiny to be seen. Dandruff occurs when this process is caused to be sped up which results on more flakes of skin that often stick together to become the large visible flakes we call dandruff.
What Causes Dandruff?
There are a number of variables that can on their own, or in combination, make a person to have dandruff. Listed below are what primarily causes dandruff:
- Eczema: Eczema can happen to any part of the body, including the scalp. When this happens, dandruff will likely be a symptom.
- Seborrheic Dermatitis: This is a common cause of severe dandruff dandruff. It is identified by red-patchy-greasy skin and big spot of yellowish flakes. Seborrheic dermititis can also affect other parts of the body. Any part of the body with a large turn of oil glands, such as the armpits can be affected.
- Psoriasis: The symptoms are similar to seborrheic dermatitis but has silver flakes. Psoriasis more commonly affects the knees and elbows, but it will be a cause of dandruff if it covers the scalp.
- Dry scalp: Another common cause of dandruff is dry skin. Dry skin can be the result of the cold air of winter, and the dry warmed air within heated buildings. The flakes dandruff from dry skin are ordinarily small and much less pronounced. If this is what causes dandruff, different areas of the body often show signs of dryness as well.
- Malassezia: This is a fungus that reside on the scalp and causes to ill effects. Severe dandruff issue could occur if the fungus growth is viral. It feeds on the oil from the hair follicles and irritates the skin which then leads to unusual skin growth. The flakes of dandruff produced are big as the skin clumps together glued by the oil. The symptoms are similar to seborrheic dermatitis.
- Not shampooing often: Allowing oil and skin flakes to build up on your scalp can create dandruff.
